Having lost interest in PC's, DVD's, CD's, WiFi and Xbox, I never thought I'd say this but I am beginning to have nothing to do in my spare time.

I am also of the strong opinion that modern man has lost the essential skills he would need to survive if he were ever to find himself alone outside of the urban concrete jungle. So recently I have decided to take up wood carving, particularly in it's most basic form of whittling.

As a kid I always remember making bows and arrows amongst other things with my brother, but other than that I was lacking in inspiration. So Having picked up a copy of "The little Book of whittling" ( Chris Lubkemann) for ideas, and  going medieval with an axe in the woods behind my house, I was left with my knife and substantial amount of tree to work with.

Thus far I am the proud owner of two wooden spoons, Three wooden ritual blades and am a quarter of the way through a small wooden statue. I have no idea what I intend to do with these items as I have no need nor desire to keep them, they are however a great way to pass the time.

I would encourage everyone to get to grips with this ancient craft and will hopefully be putting some pics up soon.

any comments/opinions welcome, or suggestions from other woodcarvers!

A suggestion from Yspaddaden.... You could perhaps use these objects as ritual offerings as they are made of wood and fully biodegradeable or, if you're having a fire, perfect for burning!

Some of our religious items are very expensive.  I am not saying go commercial but you could sell statuetes and busts whenever you get good.  We need to support our pagan crafts.

I gave all the one I had carved away at the last GW moot as gifts, as soon as I've made a pile more I shall probably do the same.

Also if anyone wants me to do one especialy for them just drop me a message, although if you can find a suitable piece of wood from a tree of your choosing for me to work with it would be a better, more personal piece.

You have inspired me. I'd love to work with wood and this seems the most simplist way to get started. I have ordered the book and now need to find a good knife to get started. Thanks for that.

I gave away virtually all of the ones I had made to the Great Westeners as Yule gifts, however as soon as I whip some more up I'll get some photos uploaded.

I have aquired a branch from a fallen tree at the millenium green ritual space and will hopefully get round to carving something/s  from it this week

but as i say if anyone has anything they particularly want me to do just drop me a message, they don't take me very long so between finishing the trilogy I'm reading at the moment and completing mass effect 2 I'm sure I can spare an hour or so

I'm thinking of branching off into wands (excuse the pun)
have a few ideas, it just takes me forever to find time to get down the woods to find material to work with.
