Berlin-based climate startup ecoworks is focusing on addressing the problem of energy inefficient buildings in Europe. According to the startup, around 75% of buildings on the continent are energy inefficient, with half of the 315 million residential units rated as E or worse for energy performance. However, Europe aims to achieve zero net emissions by 2050, necessitating the rapid renovation of millions of existing buildings.
CEO and co-founder Emanuel Heisenberg argues that traditional construction companies are not equipped to renovate all these buildings, as housing and construction companies invest little in research and development. Therefore, ecoworks is using automated manufacturing and digital technologies to automate construction and decrease renovation costs, with the goal of creating affordable, energy-efficient housing for the future. The startup focuses on retrofitting apartment blocks, using prefabricated insulation panels and renewable energy generation installations to reduce energy loss and transition to decarbonized heating systems. This smart retrofitting approach aims to significantly reduce heat loss, bringing down energy consumption by 85-90%.
Ecoworks aims to integrate its smart retrofitting approach to revolutionize existing buildings in Germany’s urban environment, using pre-fabricated components manufactured off-site to reduce costs and construction disruptions for residents. The startup has completed multiple projects and is currently working on renovating 850 apartments, aiming for faster and less disruptive construction timelines compared to traditional linear methods. The approach allows residents to remain in the buildings during renovation, with minimal inconvenience.
The startup plans to license its methods outside Germany’s borders, presenting a more efficient and cost-effective solution to the challenges of European energy inefficient buildings.
